“The Russian version of events is full of mistakes, manipulation and disinformation to the point where it is hard to single out facts,” Jürgen Roth, a German journalist and author of a book about the Smolensk crash, tells TV Republika. He also informs that he is in possession of German intelligence reports, which indicate that German authorities have no doubt as to what caused the crash in Smolensk. “If a military plane with NATO leader and other officials was shot down now, we would have war, and not just the cold war we are experiencing at present, but a real, “hot” one. Willingness to avoid it may be the reason no one wants to explore the Smolensk crash and establish the truth,” said Mr. Roth.
“My suspicions were first raised when Russian report was published, deeming the crash an accident. I had doubts regarding the credibility of those in charge of the investigation into the Smolensk crash and that sparked my interest. I follow the Russian policy of lies and manipulation and for that reason I tried to find out what lies beneath the so called accident,” explains Mr. Roth when questioned why he wrote his book in the first place.
The journalist reveals that he is in possession of two German intelligence reports which indicate that the German secret services had no doubt what the real circumstances of the Smolensk crash were. “Although the intelligence needs to be careful when drawing conclusions, they (Germans) do think that the Smolensk crash was no accident and explosives were used to cause it. I went a step further and tried to find out more. I investigated the facts and there were plenty of factors indicating that it was not an accident, that it had to be more than that,” emphasises Mr. Roth.
Mr. Roth explains that his book was aiming mostly at the German public, who has little knowledge on what actually happened in Smolensk. The source of knowledge for Germans is media, which relies entirely on the Russian version of events and findings of the Russian report by MAK. Mr. Roth finds it significant that the Polish president Lech Kaczyński was the only politician who openly criticised Putin’s politics back in 2010. “German government considered President Kaczyński a political outcast. Since CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) is officially in power in Germany and Donald Tusk had a close connection with the party, it makes him partially responsible. The intelligence reports were also read by highly ranked officials in the German government. I don’t know why those individuals did not react,” says Mr. Roth.
In his book, the journalist describes in detail Vladimir Putin’s political approach. He begins with analysing Moscow bombs attacks organised by FSB (Russian Federal Security Service). He highlights the fact that individuals who attempted their own investigation of the attacks were killed. Mr Roth also writes about the war in Georgia, the Smolensk crash, Kremlin’s aggressive approach towards Ukraine, and the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner.
“Putin’s approach is in line with FSB and GRU’s (Russian Main Intelligence Directorate), which operate not only in Russia, but also in Poland and Ukraine in order to implement their politics. “When the Malaysian airliner was shot down Donald Tusk saw the need for an international investigation, but he does not see it in the case of the crash in Smolensk. Tusk was a close friend of Putin back in 2010, but he changed his mind now,” says Mr Roth.
Jürgen Roth’s book begins with his key point, and his explanation of the international “conspiracy of silence” around the Smolensk crash. His analysis is shocking. “I began my book by asking what actually happened. If a military plane with NATO leader and other officials was shot down now, we would have war and not just the cold war we are experiencing at present, but a “hot” war. Willingness to avoid it may be the reason no one wants to explore the Smolensk crash and establish the truth. I think some governments know what really happened, but they won’t speak for political reasons. They don’t want to fuel the already began conflict between Russia and Western countries,” concludes Mr. Roth.
