Open letter by family members of the Smolensk crash victims addressed to Chancellors of Polish and foreign universities and higher education institutions in the EU, the USA and Canada, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Members of Parliament and Senators of the Republic of Poland.

Warsaw, 22nd October 2013

Dear Sirs, Ladies and Gentlemen

Three years and a half have passed from the day on which we lost our loved one. Although the Prosecutor’s investigation concerning the reasons and the course of the crush has not terminated yet and is still on-going, we are losing hope in identifying and bringing does responsible to justice.

A group of 145 researches seeking the truth have organized already the second Smolensk Conference.

This Conference not only revealed to the public opinion new and often ground breaking analysis, but also strongly demonstrated the number of irregularities and omissions, committed during the investigation conducted by the Polish Committee for Investigation of National Aviation Accidents and the Prosecutor’s investigation. It proved that the findings of the governmental Miller’s committee are not credible, and lacked reliable research. Therefore today we – the families participating in the II Smolensk Conference - would like to ask for help in the research conducted by the researchers, offering access to laboratories, and ask for  support in the form of grants for conducting such research.

In the first place we direct ourselves to the authorities of Polish universities, since our nearest and dearest died serving our Country. We are not guided by emotions, as suggested by some media and public representatives, but by the imperative of finding out the truth on the circumstances and reasons for the death of our loved ones. Our aim is not to introduce divisions, but to unite by means of a credible description of the reasons behind April 10th, 2010. Lies are responsible for divisions. Let’s join forces in an attempt to uncover the truth, and divisions will disappear on their own.

For year we have been asking for the appointment of a new, international committee to carry out the investigation of the 2010 Polish Air Force Tu-154M crash transparently in accordance with international standards and supervision, free from any potential conflict of interests, and the work of the researchers participating in the 1st and in the 2nd Smolensk conference can be treated as a starting point for the works of such a committee.

We would like to ask the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences as well as to MPs and Senators of the Republic of Poland for the support of our appeal. Finally, we would also like to thank wholeheartedly the Organizers and all participants of the II Smolensk Conference and present them with our respect for their work, efforts and courage. Your attitude is for us, the families, a source of hope that the reasons behind the crash can be clarified and made public.

During the Conference wpolityce.pl distributed and circulated a letter written in the defence and in support of researchers under attack by mainstream media, which was signed by almost 4500 readers of wpolityce website.

We, the undersigned, would like to express our solidarity with independent researchers, who have been investigating the Smolensk crash, including those co-operating with the independent Parliamentary Team chaired by Anotni Macierewicz.

In a situation when state institutions have failed and avoid the necessary research and action aimed at finding the truth on the tragic death of the Polish elite, these experts contribute with their expertise, time and skills to this case.

Unfortunately, they are harassed by the state authorities, by certain media and by a part of the academic world, which reminds us of similar practices, used in the People’s Republic of Poland in relation to persons involved in the activities of the opposition.

We would like to protest against that and we represent that disinterested involvement of independent experts is the act done in the best spirit of true “Solidarity”.

We should thank independent scientists for their courage and commitment, who should obtain our support.
